Recognising a Pet Emergency

Pets cannot tell you when something is wrong. As a pet owner, it helps to know the warning signs. The sooner you act, the better the outcome.

Here are common signs that your pet needs emergency care:

  • Difficulty breathing: gasping, breathing fast, or making unusual sounds
  • Sudden collapse or weakness: cannot stand or suddenly becomes very weak
  • Seizures: especially a first seizure or multiple seizures in a short time
  • Severe vomiting or diarrhoea: repeated episodes, especially with blood
  • Swollen or bloated abdomen: can indicate a life threatening condition in larger dogs
  • Inability to urinate: straining with nothing coming out, especially common in male cats
  • Trauma or injury: road accidents, falls, or bite wounds from other animals

What to Do in a Pet Emergency

Stay calm. Your pet can sense your stress.

If your pet is unconscious, keep their airway clear. Handle them gently and place them on a flat surface for transport.
